Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, Tango, and East Coast Swing are five wedding dances to learn in Saratoga Springs, NY. Each offers a different feel, from a gentle, flowing first dance to something playful or dramatic.
The right choice starts with your song and how you want to move together. You might want a few familiar steps or a full routine with a clear beginning and ending.
At Fred Astaire Dance Studios – Saratoga Springs, we help couples explore those choices. You can bring a song you love, a few ideas, or simply a question about where to begin. If you haven’t chosen your song yet, our instructors can help you find a song that fits your personality, skill level, and the feeling you want to create for your wedding.
Comparing Five Wedding Dances to Learn
Below, we’ll look at five popular wedding dance styles and the types of songs and music that work well with each one, so you can get a better idea of which style might suit your first dance.
| Dance | Feel | Music |
| Waltz | Flowing and graceful | Songs with a clear three-beat rhythm |
| Foxtrot | Classic and relaxed | Jazz standards and big-band songs |
| Rumba | Warm and expressive | Romantic songs with a four-beat rhythm |
| Tango | Bold and dramatic | Songs with a bold, marching rhythm and sharp accents |
| East Coast Swing | Playful and lively | Swing, rock-and-roll, or upbeat pop songs |
These are suggestions, not a popularity ranking. A favorite song may suit another style better, and that is worth exploring.
1. Waltz
Waltz is a popular choice for weddings. Picture gentle turns and smooth movement around the floor. It has a repeating “one-two-three” count, which gives the dance its distinct feel.
A basic box pattern combines forward, sideways, closing, and backward steps. You can work on that pattern before adding turns or traveling farther.
The music needs to fit the rhythm. A slow love song is not automatically a Waltz, so ask your instructor to listen before choosing the style.
For wedding preparation, the slower Waltz can be a more manageable starting point than the fast-turning Viennese Waltz.

2. Foxtrot
Foxtrot can suit couples who enjoy jazz music and want their first dance to feel relaxed and polished. Its steps are based on walking, which gives beginners something familiar to build on.
One common pattern uses two slow walking steps, followed by a quicker side step and a closing step. You may hear it counted as “slow, slow, quick, quick.”
The challenge is moving together without rushing or taking steps that are too large. Your instructor can help you adjust the stride so both partners stay comfortable.
Because Foxtrot often travels, share your floor dimensions early. A routine for a large reception floor may need changes for a smaller space.
3. Rumba
Often called the “dance of love,” Rumba moves at a slow, romantic pace. Its smooth hip motion and precise timing take time to develop, so it rewards patient practice.
If you’re considering Rumba for your wedding, we recommend starting the lessons at least six months before the big day so you have enough time to learn and practice the choreography with confidence.
American Rumba includes a box step, but it feels different from Waltz. Slow actions take two beats, while quick actions take one. That timing gives you moments to settle into a movement instead of stepping at the same speed throughout.
4. Tango
It can suit couples who enjoy strong musical accents and want a more dramatic first dance. Sharp movements, sudden pauses, and quick changes of direction give Tango its distinct character.
For beginners, your instructor will guide you through the basic Tango steps and show you how to move together as a couple. You can then build on those simple movements with a well-timed pause or change of direction to create the dramatic quality Tango is known for. You don’t need a long or complicated routine to make an impression.
Your instructor can also adapt the movements and choreography to your experience, comfort level, and wedding outfit. If your outfit limits your movement, mention it during your lessons so the choreography can be adjusted accordingly.
5. East Coast Swing
East Coast Swing is a good style to explore if you want an upbeat and lively first dance. It works well with swing music, rock and roll, and some pop songs, and its energetic character can bring a playful feel to your wedding dance.
Your instructor will introduce you to the basic Swing steps and show you how to coordinate your movements with your partner. As you become more comfortable, you can add turns and other variations to make the dance more dynamic.
Your instructor can help you work with the rhythm and tempo of your chosen song, so the movements feel comfortable and natural rather than overwhelming.
It’s also helpful to practice in shoes similar to the ones you plan to wear for your wedding. This gives you and your instructor a chance to see how the footwear affects your balance, movement, and turns, and make adjustments to the choreography if needed.
