“Inspiring people to try something they’ve never done before

– I want to do that for my students”

The first time I went to a salsa class was in high school. I invited a girl to try to impress her but she didn’t even stay for the whole class – she left halfway through.

I, on the other hand, really enjoyed it. The teacher, Henri, must have thought I enjoyed it too because he liked my dancing and invited me to go to all his group classes.

In addition to taking all these salsa classes, Henri started training me to become one of his dance teachers. He showed me how to teach people, what that felt like, and how it was just as rewarding as dancing.

Henri was able to lead a room and inspire a whole group of people to try something they’ve never done before, even if they were uncomfortable. I thought, “wow, that’s amazing. I want to
do that for my students too!”

Every night, I would sneak out of the house to go teach. Without a car, I had to get rides from friends or even take the bus and train – but nothing was going to stop me from teaching dance.

When I was 19, I joined Fred Astaire Dance Studios as an instructor in the styles of ballroom and Latin. The amazing coaches taught me about connection, corework, and posture – elevating my dancing to a whole new level.

Fred Astaire Dance Studios not only taught me WHAT to dance, but also HOW to dance. It was a much deeper breakdown of what should be going through your head and having awareness of what the body is doing.

It was really about building a foundation from the bottom up. People can tell that you’re a good dancer just by the way you stand!

My teaching abilities were also improved through Fred Astaire Dance Studios’ one-on-one lessons system. In these private sessions, I was able to give more input to each student and really foster their growth.

Ultimately, it was Fred Astaire Dance Studios coaches and systems that enabled me to become the successful dancer and teacher I am today.

While the passion for the art motivates me to continue improving my dancing everyday, my true reward is the experiences I get to share with people through teaching.

On their first lesson, people who have never danced before can be nervous. But when the music comes on and they’re moving through the basic steps, they say, “oh, this isn’t so bad… I can do this!”

We all just need to give ourselves the opportunity to be inspired. So don’t let anything hold you back.
