The Benefits of Dance

“A good dancer is not necessarily defined by great technique, skill, or ability to pick up choreography but by confidence. When you feel the music, it penetrates to your soul. Everybody’s a dancer. The greatest dancer is someone who is willing to dance, not afraid.” ~ Alyssa Edwards
When you think about dancing what is the first thing that pops into your mind? Do you picture legends such as Fred Astaire and one of his beautiful partners floating gracefully across the floor or do you think of your favorite modern artist on stage with moves unlike any other?
Dance is self-expressive, artistic and often associated with grace and skill, and while it’s true that it may take years to craft, you have to start somewhere and at the very least dance has so many benefits. Did you know dancing can burn a monstrous 200-400 calories in just 30-minutes! That’s equivalent to an individual spending roughly an hour of vigorous ice skating, rock climbing, skiing, boxing, tennis or soccer. Here are some other benefits to consider:
Increased Flexibility
Warming up and stretching are a critical part of any exercise regimen especially dancing where you are using your whole body. To avoid injury, get your blood moving and increase your body’s flexibility, stretch before you begin. If you are just starting out with a dance class you will find that the more you dance, you will have an increase in your range of motion, and as your flexible increases, your abilities will as well. Be sure to talk with your Fred Astaire Dance Studios instructor about a recommended warm-up regimen.
Improved condition of your heart and lungs
Dance can improve and strengthen your heart, lungs, and circulatory system and the good news is, everyone can do it! No matter what your age is you can adjust the tempo based on the music giving your body breaks when it needs it and upping the workout during the faster free-flowing parts of the music.
Boost your mood
Let’s face it, dancing is just plain FUN! In a way that a monotonous treadmill most likely will never be. Dance has variety, is social, and is associated often with the word party. What’s not to love? In addition to the skills you require, people you need, and increased strength, dancing can trigger a serious release of the feel-good hormone serotonin which can promote decreased levels of depression and stress. Having a bad day at the office? Try coming home, blasting your favorite song and shaking it off. The feel-good power combination of dance and music is undeniable.
