I have always loved dancing and always wanted to take dance lessons. I finally decided to go for it back in late September. I came to a guest party after calling and inquiring if I could come by; Briana (front desk manager) was quite warm and encouraged me to come in. I came with my mom and I knew the moment I took their class that this was the place for me.
Xin Yi taught the class and her upbeat, kind, and patient personality sold me. Everyone in attendance, from the instructors to the students, was welcoming and accepting. I was very nervous coming in but their demanor assuaged my fears. I then signed up for the introductory lesson with Pierre (my primary instructor, who is not only charismatic and spirited, but also extremely talented and has a great knack for teaching), and went on to do the Beginner and now the Social Foundation program.
I cannot stress enough how transformative dance is, from building your confidence to being a stress reliever, but even more so, attending a dance studio such as this.
From the group classes taught by William (with teaching experience across the Caribbean, Africa, Spain, and now US), to the guest parties and practice parties where I've learned new moves from instructors like Paul (with extensive dance competition experience) and Jewel (with extensive Latin dance experience), and also from students with more experience. Every single moment and penny is worth it.
I love this studio so much that I have brought multiple friends and my parents to guest parties, and they have signed up as well!!!
If you are trying to take the leap of faith into the world of dancing, look no further than Fred Astaire Dance Studios Duluth!!!
The instructors were truly the highlight. Kudos to Xin Yi, Paul, William, Jewel and Pierre. They were patient, professional, and made the entire learning experience enjoyable. They broke down each step clearly and offered helpful tips on posture, timing, and technique. Their positive energy kept us motivated, even when certain moves were a bit tricky. They also made sure to give personalized attention to everyone, which helped boost our confidence.
The studio itself was warm and welcoming, creating an environment where beginners felt at ease. The overall vibe was relaxed but also professional, with just the right balance of fun and focus. They played great music, which really helped set the mood for each dance style—whether it was the romantic flow of the waltz or the energetic beat of the cha-cha.
The lessons were structured to gradually build on what we learned week by week. Each class started with a quick warm-up, followed by a detailed breakdown of the steps for a specific dance (like the tango, salsa, or foxtrot). By the end of the class, we'd often put it all together into a mini routine. It was great to see progress after each session, and the pacing was just right—challenging enough to keep us engaged, but not so overwhelming that we felt lost.
One of the best parts of adult ballroom lessons was the social aspect. Whether you came with a partner or solo, there was always the opportunity to rotate partners during practice, which helped everyone get a feel for leading and following with different people. We made some great new friends through these lessons, and dance parties which added to the fun.
On top of the dancing skills, I was surprised by how much of a workout these classes were. It’s a great way to improve your balance, coordination, and flexibility. Plus, dancing is a fantastic way to reduce stress and clear your mind—by the end of each session, we felt rejuvenated.
Adult ballroom dance lessons are a wonderful way to get moving, have fun, and learn something new. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, the lessons are designed to meet you where you're at. Plus, there's something special about connecting with your partner (or a new friend) through dance. I would absolutely recommend giving it a try if you're looking to step out of your comfort zone and experience the joy of ballroom dancing try out Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Duluth.
