Why Learn Salsa With Us?

Fred Astaire Dance Studios have been teaching people to dance since 1947, and our Durham studio is run by professionals who have competed at the highest level. Owner Yuriy Simakov began dancing at age seven in Ukraine, became a national champion at twelve, and went on to win international ballroom competitions across Europe. Co-owner Oksana Klyuchnyk represented Ukraine on its national dance team and reached the finals of numerous championships in both ballroom and Latin styles.

That competitive background shapes how our whole team teaches. Every instructor is certified through the Fred Astaire curriculum, so lessons follow a proven structure rather than improvised routines. You learn correct technique from day one, which means faster progress and fewer bad habits to unlearn later.

What Happens in Your First Salsa Lesson

Ballroom dance shoes – salsa dance classes in Durham, NC

Salsa is built on a simple pattern: three steps danced over four beats of music. Your first lesson starts with that basic step. Your instructor breaks it down slowly, helps you find the rhythm, and shows you how to stay on time with the music. Most new students are dancing the basic comfortably before their first lesson ends.

From there, you learn how to lead or follow clearly, then practice small patterns that connect naturally into real dancing. Nothing is rushed. Each skill builds on the last, and our instructors adjust the pace to you.

Group Classes, Private Lessons, and Practice Parties

First, the question we hear most: no partner is needed at our studio. Plenty of students come alone, and group classes rotate partners so everyone practices leading and following with different people. Couples are welcome too, and couples salsa dance lessons are a popular way to prepare for weddings, anniversaries, and date nights.

The studio is open Monday through Friday from noon to 9:30 PM, so lessons fit easily around work. Private lessons give you one-on-one attention tailored to your goals and are the fastest way to improve. Weekly group classes bring the social energy salsa is known for at a friendly price. We also host regular practice parties where students use their new skills in a relaxed setting, and beginner-friendly socials often open with a short lesson before the dancing begins, so newcomers never feel lost. Salsa Styles We Teach

Salsa is not one dance but a family of styles, each with its own history and feel. Colombian salsa is known for rapid footwork and quick, skipping movements, a precise and athletic style for dancers who love intricate steps. Cuban Casino, rooted in Cuban Son and popularized in the 1950s, moves in a lively circular flow rather than a straight line, giving it a playful character. Los Angeles style blends mambo, swing, and Latin ballroom influences into a linear, showy dance that performance teams love. Our instructors teach all three and help you find the one that fits you.

Why Students Stick With Salsa

Salsa dancing is genuine exercise that never feels like a workout. It improves fitness, coordination, and balance, and learning patterns to music is great for brain health. Students consistently tell us their confidence grows along with their dancing, and a weekly lesson is a reliable stress reliever. Just as important, salsa is social by design, and between class rotations and our socials it is one of the easiest ways in the Triangle to meet new people.

Many students branch out into bachata, merengue, cumbia, and other Latin rhythms once the basics click. The lead and follow skills transfer directly, so each new dance comes faster than the last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Salsa a good dance for beginners to learn?

Yes. The basic step is simple, the music makes the timing easy to hear, and you can dance socially with just a handful of patterns. Many beginners feel comfortable with the basics after only a few lessons.

Most students dance the basic step in their first lesson and feel confident at a social within a couple of months of weekly lessons. Mastery takes longer, and that is half the fun.

You can pick up footwork from videos, but salsa is a partner dance, and the connection between lead and follow is nearly impossible to learn alone. Structured instruction with real partners builds those skills quickly and correctly.

New students start with two lessons for $59. After that, pricing depends on whether you choose private lessons, group classes, or a mix. Call us and we will help you find the right fit for your goals and budget.
