What Is the Foxtrot?

The foxtrot is a gliding ballroom dance set to music written in 4/4 time and danced to a slow, slow, quick, quick rhythm. Vaudeville performer Harry Fox introduced it in New York in 1914, and it soon became America’s most popular social dance. Dancers often call it walking with style.

You will hear its rhythm in big band standards and Frank Sinatra classics, which is why it fits weddings, galas, and dinner dances. It is one of the four American Smooth dances, alongside the waltz, tango, and Viennese waltz, and the quickstep grew out of it.

What Beginners Learn in Foxtrot Lessons

If you’re just starting out, your instructor will start with the basics. You’ll learn controlled movement and simple steps you can put together quickly! By the end of your first lesson, you’ll likely be able to dance the Foxtrot.

  1. The rhythm. Hear the slow, slow, quick, quick count before you move. Our guide to counting music in dance is a great place to start.

  2. The basic step. Leaders walk forward, followers walk back, then both step to the side and close.

  3. Frame and posture. A steady frame is what makes the dance glide instead of shuffle, so it gets corrected from day one.

  4. First patterns. The box step, promenade, and a simple turn have you dancing with a partner within your first few lessons.

Whether you want to practice one on one with an instructor or in a group setting, you can do either (or both) at Fred Astaire. Our private lessons are designed to give you personalized feedback on frame and footwork. They are often the fastest way to improve and the best place to start for new dancers. If you have a partner, you can attend our group classes with them, or come solo and rotate partners, which builds confidence leading or following anyone at a social event. Most students combine the two. Not sure which to choose? Our post on private vs. group lessons for beginners can help you decide where to start.

Couples and solo dancers are both always welcome. Our studio is open Monday through Friday from 12:00 – 9:30 PM, and weekly practice parties let you practice what you learned in an upbeat setting with fellow dancers.

Foxtrot for Weddings, Social Events, and Competition

Many couples choose the foxtrot for a wedding first dance because it tends to always look polished and fits almost any song. Social dancers use it at galas, cruises, and dinner dances. For the competitive side, our instructors coach American Smooth for Fred Astaire regional and national competitions, the same circuit where our owner earned her titles. If you love the big band sound, swing dance lessons are a natural next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The foxtrot is one of the easiest ballroom dances for beginners because the basic step follows a natural walking pattern. Most new students master the basics by the end of their first lesson. The challenge comes later, in putting it all together and making the dance look effortless.

Rushing the slow steps, looking down at your feet, bouncing instead of gliding, and letting the frame collapse. Each one breaks the smooth, continuous movement that defines the dance. Private lessons catch these habits early, before they become bad habits.

Most instructors name the Viennese waltz or the quickstep because of their speed and advanced footwork. A dance that looks like it belongs on a competition floor takes years of work on technique and musicality.

The waltz is danced in 3/4 time with a pronounced rise and fall. The foxtrot is danced in 4/4 time with a walking rhythm and a flatter, gliding movement. Both are American Smooth dances, and students who learn one usually pick up the other quickly.

No, no partner is necessary! Many of our students come alone. In private lessons you dance with your instructor, and in group classes partners rotate so everyone gets practice leading and following.

New students pay $59 for their first two lessons at our Durham studio. After that, pricing depends on your goals, how often you want to dance, and whether you choose private lessons, group classes, or both. We walk through the options at the end of your intro lessons.

Most students are comfortable with a social foxtrot after 2-3 weeks of weekly lessons. Competition-level technique takes longer, and many of our students keep training for years because the dance is so rewarding.

Comfortable clothes you can move in and shoes with leather or suede soles, which let you pivot and glide. Rubber soles grip the floor and make the dance harder than it needs to be.
