Do Something Special for your Heart this Heart Month

Heart facts everyone should know.

What does texting someone, checking your email, scheduling an appointment, stretching, ordering a meal, adding songs to your favorite playlist, paying a bill, booking a hotel…have in common with cardiovascular disease? These are all things that can be done in roughly 30-seconds, and in that same amount of time, one person dies from cardiovascular disease in the United States?

Furthermore, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. About 647,000 Americans die from heart disease each year – that’s 1 in every 4 deaths. February is American Heart Month and even though the statistics may sound disheartening, the good news is heart disease can often be prevented when people make the right choices regarding their health and exercise is a big part of that!

Not only is dancing fun for all ages, but a regular spin on the dancefloor can also lower your odds of developing heart disease. As ballroom dancing becomes part of your regular routine, you will most likely find that you have a slower heart rate, as well as lower blood pressure and even lower cholesterol. And because dancing requires a great deal of movement, it definitely offers an amazing cardiovascular workout.

  • The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity, or an equivalent combination each week.
  • Add moderate- to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity (such as resistance or weights) on at least 2 days per week.
  • Spend less time sitting. Even light-intensity activity can offset some of the risks of being sedentary.
  • Gain even more benefits by being active at least 300 minutes (5 hours) per week.
  • Increase amount and intensity gradually over time.
