Hustle
In the late 1960s and into the 1970s, discotheques—better known as discos—became a cultural phenomenon in both Europe and the U.S. With vibrant light displays and cutting-edge sound systems, they were the go-to hotspots for entertainment. Early disco dancing was all about freestyle moves, heavily influenced by iconic performers like The Jackson 5. Picture bellbottoms, elevator shoes, and a whole lot of groovy energy! But by 1973, something fresh was emerging. At a venue called The Grand Ballroom, a new “touch dance” was taking shape. This simple 6-count step, which included inside and outside turns, quickly caught the attention of the young men, setting the stage for what would soon become the Hustle.
As the Hustle gained traction, it started to evolve into something much more dynamic. Latin discotheques like The Corso, Barney Goo Goo’s, and The Ipanema became hubs for this new style, blending it seamlessly with the classic rhythms of mambo, salsa, and cha cha. These influences added intricate turn patterns and flowing arm movements, earning it the nickname “Rope Hustle” or “Latin Hustle.” By the mid-1970s, the dance became a spectacle, with acrobatic and balletic elements introduced by performers eager to captivate audiences. Dance contests sprang up nationwide, and the Hustle took on a life of its own, evolving into an exciting rotational pattern with dramatic moves that kept crowds buzzing.
The late 1970s were the golden years for Hustle, with New York City at the heart of its innovation. NYC club dancers and competitors perfected the 3-count Hustle (&-1-2-3), which became the most thrilling variation of the dance. Hustle wasn’t just confined to clubs; it borrowed moves from ballroom, swing, and Latin dances, adding a versatile flair that made it both timeless and adaptable. With its unique mix of smooth traveling steps and intricate turns, Hustle became a nationwide sensation that still inspires dancers today.
