Wedding Dance Lessons for Your First Dance
In your $59 wedding consultation and first lesson, your instructor listens to your song, asks about your venue, your dress, and your comfort level, and watches how the two of you move together. From there we build the choreography, usually 2 to 3 minutes long, to fit your song, your ability, and your personality. Most couples choose a slow foxtrot, rumba, or waltz; bachata if you want Latin dancing that is closer and more modern; or East Coast Swing for an upbeat song. If you don’t have a song yet, we help you pick one that dances well.
What to Expect in Wedding Dance Lessons
Every lesson is private, so you set the pace, build confidence at your own speed, and no one is watching. Here is how a first dance comes together.
- Choose your song first. The song decides the dance, so bring it to your first lesson. Not sure? Bring two or three and your instructor shows you how each one dances.
- Learn the basic step and timing. Weight shifts, posture, rhythm, and how to move with your partner as a team, at your own pace. This is where the swaying stops.
- Add the choreography. An entrance, a few patterns, a turn, and an ending your photographer will want. We keep it inside your skill level so it looks natural, not rehearsed.
- Rehearse like it’s the reception. Wear your wedding shoes, practice in a skirt the length of your dress, and run the full song at the studio before the big day.
We recommend starting 4 to 6 months before the wedding so there is enough time to practice without pressure. Couples with six weeks still get a polished dance; it just means weekly lessons instead of every other week.
Father-Daughter and Mother-Son Dance Lessons
Parent dances get the same preparation as the first dance, scaled to your preference. Most dads and moms want one thing: to look comfortable for a couple of minutes while enjoying the dance with their daughter or son. One or two lessons usually covers it, with a simple step that fits the song, a turn, and a planned ending. We teach fathers who have never danced and mothers who dance every weekend, and if you want a surprise routine for the reception, we can build that too. The bride or groom can come to the first lesson or let the parent take it solo.
Private Lessons, Practice Parties, and the Wedding Party
Wedding lessons are private lessons, scheduled around your calendar Monday through Friday. Couples who want extra floor time can add a group class or a practice party, which doubles as a dress rehearsal in front of other people. The wedding party and singles are welcome too; a group class in the weeks before the wedding gets everyone comfortable once the band starts. If you want to keep dancing after the honeymoon, our couples dance lessons pick up where the wedding program leaves off.
