Quickstep Dance Lessons in Our Warren Studio
A Lively and Energetic Ballroom Dance
The Quickstep, with its roots in Ragtime and first danced by Caribbean and African dancers, was developed in the 1920s in suburban New York from a combination of Foxtrot, Charleston, Peabody, and the One-Step. Originally, it was danced solo, away from the partner, but later became a partner dance. Since it evolved from Foxtrot, it was originally given the name “Quick Time Foxtrot” but was eventually changed to Quickstep. Although the quickstep was heavily influenced by the jazz culture of the period, it owes some of its movements to the equally popular Afro-Cuban and Latino dance crazes of the 1920s and 1930s. The dance traveled to England and was developed into the dance that we know today, and was standardized in 1927.
Skip A Step on the Dance Floor with Quickstep
Quickstep is a combination of walks and chasses in a basic form, but in an advanced stage, hops jumps & many syncopations are utilized. It is an elegant and glamorous dance and body contact is maintained throughout the dance. The Quickstep music is written in 4/4 time and should be played at a tempo of about 48 -‐ 52 measures per minute for examinations and competitions.
The Quickstep is a progressive and turning dance moving along the Line of Dance, utilizing Walks and Chasse movements. Rise and Fall, Sway, and Bounce action are the basic characteristics of the International Style Quickstep.
Beginner Quickstep Dance Classes
Beginner quickstep classes build a strong foundation in movement, timing, and partner connection. At the beginning of the program, students learn to move around the room with proper posture, using the feet and toes for light, controlled steps. Our friendly instructors will teach you the slow-quick-quick-slow rhythm and several core figures in the beginner classes.
These include the quarter turn to the right, progressive chasse, forward lock, natural turn, natural turn with hesitation, and natural spin turn. We also teach you the natural pivot turn, chasse reverse turn, closed impetus, back lock, and running finish. These figures help you learn directional movement and balance. Styling is minimal, and the emphasis stays on clean execution, timing, and learning to glide with the quick-step rhythm.
Advanced Quickstep Dance Classes
Advanced quickstep classes build on the beginner program with faster pacing, detailed technique, and expressive performance. Dancers refine foot and toe control to execute complex figures with speed and agility while maintaining a strong connection and posture. Our experienced instructors will teach you the six quick run, four quick run, cross swivel, rumba cross, hover corte, tipsy to right and left, closed telemark, fishtail, V6, double reverse spin, and change of direction.
You will also learn the quarter turn with added styling. Dancers focus on shaping, rise and fall, musical phrasing, and improvisation. We will teach you to incorporate more athletic and dynamic elements like hops, runs, kicks, and slides that are characteristic of advanced Quickstep. The goal is to achieve smooth, expressive movement across the room with advanced quick-step choreography.
