DID YOU KNOW? Dancing has proven to be a wonderful stress reliever! Dancing causes the release of four extremely important chemicals crucial for feelings of happiness and well-being: serotonin, which is shown to prevent depression, anxiety, and insomnia; dopamine, which is released in the brain during pleasurable moments; oxytocin, which is released when we bond with others; and endorphins, hormones produced by the nervous system to cope with both physical and emotional pain. Next time you’ve had a long day at work or are feeling stressed, get up and get dancing for a quick mood pick-me-up!

Spotlight on JIVE! The origins of Jive dance is from African-American cultural dance. It is an uninhibited variation of the Jitterbug, which is a form of Swing dancing which gained popularity in the 1930’s. During World War II, American soldiers stationed throughout Europe brought with them this dance. It soon became popular among Europe’s younger generation, who called it the Boogie-Woogie.
