Hustle

In the late 1960s and through the 1970s, discotheques—complete with flashing lights and high-quality sound systems—became the epicenter of entertainment in Europe and the U.S. Early 1970s disco dancing was mostly freestyle, inspired by the “rock” style popularized by performers like The Jackson 5. Bellbottom pants and platform shoes were the must-have fashion of the time, adding flair to the dynamic energy on the dance floor. However, 1973 marked the birth of a new dance style that would revolutionize the disco scene: the Hustle.

At The Grand Ballroom, a simple 6-count step, performed mostly by women, started gaining attention. This touch dance, featuring basic movements like inside and outside single turns, caught the eye of male dancers, sparking widespread interest. As its popularity grew, the Hustle began to evolve, incorporating elements from Latin discotheques like The Corso and The Ipanema. Here, traditional touch dances like mambo, salsa, and cha cha influenced its style, leading to intricate turn patterns, multiple hand changes, and a flowing arm motion reminiscent of rope movements. This variation became known as the “Rope Hustle” or “Latin Hustle,” blending disco’s energy with Latin dance finesse.

By the mid-1970s, Hustle fever had swept the nation, with dance contests fueling its evolution. Professional dancers added balletic arm movements and rotational patterns, elevating the style’s elegance. Competitors introduced acrobatics and dramatic lifts, making the Hustle a show-stopping spectacle. Clubs, hotels, and even television shows embraced this exciting trend, creating opportunities for dancers to showcase their innovation and wow audiences. NYC club dancers were at the forefront, developing the now-iconic 3-count Hustle (&-1-2-3) that became the gold standard for the dance.

Today, the Hustle is danced to contemporary pop hits, maintaining its smooth, fast-paced energy.
