Waltz

The Waltz is one of the most graceful dances in history, tracing its roots back over 400 years to the folk dances of Bavaria. During the 16th century, it was known as the Volte, a lively round dance that began spreading across Europe, appearing in Italy, France, and Germany. By 1812, the Waltz had made its grand debut in English ballrooms, marking its official entry into high society. Over time, the dance took on different forms and names, such as the Galop, Redowa, Boston, and Hop Waltz, each reflecting its evolution and growing popularity.

When the Waltz first entered the ballrooms of the early 19th century, it caused quite the stir. The sight of a gentleman placing his hand on a lady’s waist was considered scandalous at the time, and the dance was dismissed as improper. However, it eventually gained acceptance, first among aristocrats and later among the middle class in Europe by the early 20th century. In the United States, the Waltz broke social barriers as early as 1840 and quickly became a favorite among the general public. Its enduring charm even helped it survive the ragtime revolution, solidifying its place in dance history.

As trends shifted in the 20th century, the Waltz adapted beautifully. The advent of ragtime introduced simpler walking dances like the Foxtrot, but the Waltz responded by embracing slower tempos and variations. By the late 19th century, the box step, a hallmark of the American Waltz, was being taught, followed by the introduction of a slower, more romantic Waltz in the 1920s. Today, the Waltz is danced in three distinct tempos: the fast Viennese Waltz, a medium-paced style, and the slower American version. Known for its smooth rise and fall and elegant turns, the Waltz creates a sense of effortless gliding across the floor, making everyone feel like royalty.
