Hustle
During the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, discos—complete with cutting-edge sound systems and dazzling lights—became a cultural sensation across Europe and the U.S. Early 1970s disco dancing was primarily freestyle, heavily inspired by the dynamic moves of pop icons like The Jackson 5. Fashion played a big role too, with bellbottoms and platform shoes becoming the go-to look for the dance floor. It wasn’t long before something fresh emerged: a new style of partner dancing that would later be known as the Hustle.
In 1973, at The Grand Ballroom, a simple yet captivating 6-count step began to take shape. Initially performed without a name and largely by women, this early version of the Hustle caught the attention of the club’s male dancers, sparking widespread interest. As the dance gained traction, it began evolving. In Latin-inspired discotheques like The Corso and The Ipanema, the Hustle integrated intricate turn patterns and rhythmic arm movements reminiscent of mambo and salsa. This fusion gave rise to what became known as the “Latin Hustle” or “Rope Hustle,” a style that brought touch dancing back into the spotlight.
By the mid-1970s, Hustle fever was sweeping the nation, fueled by dance contests and a growing presence in the performing arts community. NYC dancers led the way, adding elegance and flair with balletic arm movements and rotational patterns. Performers upped the ante by incorporating acrobatics and showstopping moves to wow audiences in clubs, hotels, and even on television. The Hustle continued to borrow elements from ballroom, swing, and Latin dances, creating a dynamic and versatile style that captivated dancers everywhere.
Fast-forward to today, and the Hustle remains a fast-paced, smooth, and endlessly fun dance. Set to contemporary pop tracks, it’s characterized by its continuous spins, dramatic partner exchanges, and room for personal expression. At Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Glenn Heights, we love teaching the Hustle because it combines energy, rhythm, and creativity in a way that’s perfect for dancers of all levels.
