Shake It Off with Jive Dance Lessons
Jive originated from a mix of popular American dances in the 1930s, including jitterbug, boogie-woogie, lindy hop, east coast swing, shag, and rock ’n’ roll. Over time, these diverse styles were grouped together under the umbrella term “jive.” In the 1940s, this fusion of dances was officially named “jive,” marking the birth of the dance as we know it today.
Recognized as a Fifth Latin Dance
American G.I.s brought the dance to Europe during World War II, where it quickly captured the hearts of young people. Its lively, energetic style was seen as new and exciting. The French embraced the dance, and it gained popularity in Britain as well. By 1968, it had been officially recognized as the fifth Latin dance in International competitions. Today’s ballroom jive is a joyful, upbeat dance characterized by lively flicks and kicks. The music is in 4/4 time and is typically played at a brisk tempo of around 38 to 44 bars per minute. As a spot dance, it stays mostly in place rather than traveling along the dance floor’s line of dance. The International Style Jive features a relaxed, springy movement, with advanced dancers incorporating plenty of flicks and kicks.
